Udaipur: Years ago, the government gave the slogan ‘Hum Do, Hamare Do’ to control the growing population. To make the general public aware of this, the health department spends crores of rupees every year and makes big claims. But a case has come to light from the tribal area of Jhadol in Udaipur, Rajasthan, which is exposing these claims.
Gave birth to 17th child at the age of 55
Actually, today such a picture came out from the tribal dominated Jhadol Community Health Center, which will surprise you too. Here in the hospital, 55-year-old woman Rekha Kalbelia has given birth to her 17th child. Rekha has already become the mother of 16 children. However, her 4 sons and 1 daughter died after birth. At the same time, five of Rekha’s children are married and they also have their own children.
The family does not have a house to live in
As soon as this news spread in the hospital, it became a topic of discussion among the people. Rekha’s husband Kawara Kalbelia says that they do not have a house to live in and are living with great difficulty. To feed his children, he had to take money from the moneylender at 20% interest. He has paid lakhs of rupees so far, but the interest has not been paid in full.
This family, which earns its livelihood by collecting scrap, could not even send its children to school in the name of education. A house was built under PM Awas Yojana, but today the whole family is homeless including the children as the land is not in their name. Kawara said that we do not have enough means for food and marriage of children. Education and home problems trouble us every day.
Roshan Darangi, a gynecologist at Jhardol Community Health Center, said that when Rekha was admitted, the family told her that she was their fourth child. Later it was found out that she was their 17th child. Now Rekha and her husband will be made aware about sterilization so that such situations can be avoided in future.
While on one hand the governments are taking a pledge to make the country a developed nation in the 21st century, on the other hand a woman from the most backward tribal area of Udaipur district is giving birth to her 17th child. Call it the failure of the government system or the illiteracy of people like Rekha and Kawara. One thing is clear, till the holistic development of tribal areas and villages does not take place, we may appear developed in statistics, but the real picture on the ground will not change.
