Why Did CSK ‘Retire Out’ Ayush Mhatre While He Was Batting on a Fifty? An Embarrassing Record Created

April 12, 2026

New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings’ young batsman, Ayush Mhatre, set an unwanted record during the match against Delhi Capitals. He became only the second CSK player in the IPL to be ‘retired out’ after scoring a half-century.

The 20-year-old Mhatre played a magnificent innings of 59 runs off 36 balls; however, as part of the team’s strategy, he was recalled to the pavilion during the 18th over. At that juncture, CSK’s score stood at 175/2, and the team was looking to accelerate their scoring rate in the final overs.

  • A Major Partnership with Samson
Mhatre forged an excellent 113-run partnership with Sanju Samson. This stands as the second-highest partnership for any wicket for CSK against DC. Previously, in 2023, Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad had added 141 runs together.

Mhatre batted sensibly during the middle overs, consistently keeping the scoreboard ticking over. CSK had scored 61 runs during the Powerplay, but shortly thereafter, Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed for 15 runs. Despite this setback, the team’s scoring rate did not slow down.

Why Was the Decision to ‘Retire Out’ Taken?
A major decision was taken by CSK during the final overs when the scoring rate dipped slightly—specifically due to the precise bowling of Lungi Ngidi and T. Natarajan.

Mhatre was ‘retired out’ to pave the way for Shivam Dube, enabling him to come in and score runs rapidly against the relatively new ball. Upon his arrival, Dube batted aggressively and played a pivotal role in helping the team cross the 200-run mark. Ultimately, CSK posted a formidable total of 212/2 in their allotted 20 overs, a score to which the partnership between Mhatre and Samson contributed significantly.

    Mhatre Joins an Exclusive List
Mhatre has now joined the select list of players who have been ‘retired out’ in the history of the IPL. This list includes names such as Ravichandran Ashwin, Atharva Taide, Sai Sudharsan, Tilak Varma, and Devon Conway.

Devon Conway was the first CSK player to be retired out in this manner, and now Mhatre has become the second player.
