Furious After Failed Talks, Donald Trump Initiates Blockade of Iranian Ports; Oil Prices Skyrocket

April 13, 2026

New Delhi: Global tensions have once again reached a critical high. Peace talks held between the United States (US) and Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, ended inconclusively—effectively failing—even after 21 hours of discussions. Following this outcome, Trump appears visibly incensed once again; under his leadership, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced that it is initiating a blockade of Iranian ports. Amidst these developments, crude oil prices—which had plummeted following a two-week ceasefire—have once again surged dramatically.

On Monday, crude oil prices in the international market jumped by over 8 percent in a single bound, once again breaching the $100-per-barrel mark. Should the conflict between the two nations escalate further, these prices could soar even higher—a scenario that would significantly heighten the risk of global inflation.

Blockade Announced, Crude Prices Ignite

According to an AP report, the US-Iran talks held in Islamabad failed to reach any resolution. While US President J.D. Vance characterized the outcome as a severe setback for Iran, the Iranian side launched a fierce counter-attack against the United States. The sudden resurgence of tensions between the two nations had an immediate and direct impact on crude oil prices. Prices witnessed a massive surge following the US announcement on Monday that it would commence a blockade of Iranian ports.

  • WTI Crude Oil prices surged by 8 percent, rising to $104.24 per barrel. Meanwhile, at the time of writing, Brent Crude Oil prices had jumped by over 7 percent, reaching $102.29 per barrel. Natural gas prices also recorded an upward trend, rising by approximately 2 percent to reach $2.684. During the Iran War, Brent crude witnessed significant volatility due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The price of Brent crude—which was trading at approximately $70 per barrel at the end of February, just prior to the conflict—surged to $119 per barrel following the outbreak of hostilities. However, following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, prices retreated last week; consequently, the price of Brent crude for June delivery dropped to $95 per barrel.

*Tensions Over Hormuz Reach a Peak*
Global tensions surrounding the Iranian-influenced Strait of Hormuz have reached a critical level following the failure of peace talks held in Pakistan. This is because this maritime route controls the transit of 20 percent of the world’s oil supply. In recent days, disruptions along this route have manifested as an oil and gas crisis across numerous nations.

To put it simply, approximately one-fifth of the crude oil traded globally passes through the Strait of Hormuz every day. Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Iran are all major oil exporters. However, since the announcement of the ceasefire, ship traffic along this oil route has remained limited thus far. Marine tracking data indicates that, during this period, just over 40 commercial vessels have transited through this route.

    *What Will Trump Do Next?*
The U.S. Central Command has stated that the blockade will be applied indiscriminately to vessels of all nations entering or departing from Iranian ports and coastal areas. Nevertheless, the Command will continue to permit vessels traveling between non-Iranian ports to transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, following the failure of peace talks between the United States and Iran, a report in The Wall Street Journal states that, after diplomatic negotiations between the two nations broke down, President Donald Trump is considering launching a renewed, intense bombing campaign against Iran.
