Employees’ Protest in Noida Turns Violent: Stone-Pelting, Arson, and Vandalism of Vehicles

Noida: The sit-in protest by employees of private companies in Noida’s Phase-2 area—which had been ongoing for the past three days—suddenly turned violent on Monday. A large number of employees took to the streets early in the morning to press for various demands, including a hike in wages. The police used mild force to disperse the crowd. Subsequently, the situation escalated rapidly, and the protesters, in a fit of rage, began vandalizing police vehicles. Furthermore, they set fire to several other vehicles.

According to reports, at least two vehicles were set ablaze in the Sector-84 area. Meanwhile, in various parts of Phase-2, employees have intensified their protests by blocking roads. The protesters have long been demanding wage hikes and improvements in working conditions. They argue that, amidst rising inflation, their current salaries are insufficient to sustain their livelihoods, thereby adversely affecting their standard of living.

As the situation deteriorated, the police and the district administration swung into action. A heavy police force was deployed to the scene, and efforts were made to pacify the protesters. However, when the crowd appeared to spiral out of control, the police resorted to using mild force to disperse them. Following this, conditions in several locations gradually began to return to normal, though tension continues to prevail in the area.

Notably, just a day prior, officials from the district administration, the police, and the development authority had held a meeting with representatives of the employees. During this meeting, assurances were given that their demands would be considered and a resolution would be found. Despite these assurances, their anger did not subside, and the agitation took a violent turn. Currently, the administration is closely monitoring the situation and appealing to the public to maintain peace. Officials have stated that no form of violence will be tolerated and strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
