China Enters the Fray Amid US-Iran Tensions; Xi Jinping Proposes 4-Point Plan

April 14, 2026

New Delhi: The crisis in the Middle East is deepening following the failure of peace talks between the United States and Iran held in Pakistan. Amidst this backdrop, China has taken a significant step on the diplomatic front by launching a peace initiative. Chinese President Xi Jinping has put forward a four-point proposal aimed at achieving lasting peace in the region—a move considered particularly significant given the current geopolitical climate.

According to Xinhua, China’s state-run news agency, this proposal was unveiled during a visit to Beijing by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. During a meeting between the two leaders, Xi Jinping outlined a roadmap for restoring stability in the Middle East and simultaneously presented his four-point proposal.

Xi Jinping’s four-point proposal emphasizes prioritizing peaceful regional coexistence, respecting national sovereignty, maintaining a balance between development and security, and upholding the international rules-based order. He stated unequivocally that the world must not be allowed to revert to the “law of the jungle.”

  • The Chinese President’s remarks are being interpreted as an indirect critique of the military actions undertaken by the United States and Israel. While China has previously characterized such attacks as illegal, this time it has expressed its concerns regarding the global order in a comparatively sterner tone. The Strait of Hormuz is widely regarded as the lifeline of global energy supplies.

This vital waterway has now emerged as the epicenter of the ongoing conflict. Since early March, Iran has effectively restricted access to this route for vessels it deems to be linked to hostile nations. In response, the United States has initiated a blockade of Iranian ports and has intensified economic pressure on Tehran. The repercussions of this confrontation are already becoming evident in the global oil market.

A sharp decline has been recorded in oil supplies transiting through the Gulf region. Furthermore, Iran’s missile and drone attacks on regional energy facilities—reportedly including some targets within the UAE—have further exacerbated the situation. Meanwhile, tensions have also begun to escalate between the United States and China. US President Donald Trump has issued a warning regarding this matter.

He stated that if China is found supplying weapons to Iran, tariffs of up to 50 percent could be imposed on the country. He described this as a measure with grave consequences. Amidst this tense atmosphere, another intriguing development emerged when the Rich Starry—a tanker linked to China that had been placed under US sanctions—was spotted transiting through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to maritime traffic data, the vessel initially altered its course but subsequently resumed its voyage after providing details regarding its Chinese crew. Against the backdrop of these events, it is evident that the Middle East is no longer merely a theater for regional conflicts; rather, it is increasingly becoming the epicenter of a confrontation between global powers.
