‘Freedom from injustice…’: Sonam Wangchuk’s first message from the hospital

New Delhi: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was moved from Jantar Mantar and admitted to Safdarjung Hospital, has issued his first message following his ‘detention’. Describing it as “India’s second freedom movement,” he appealed for large-scale participation in the ‘Chalo Sansad’ (March to Parliament) protest scheduled for July 20. In his message, Wangchuk wrote, “Freedom from injustice, freedom from fear. Make the Parliament march a success to secure liberation from injustices like paper leaks and freedom from my illegal detention.”

This message from Sonam Wangchuk was conveyed from the hospital through his wife, Gitanjali. He has termed his admission to Safdarjung Hospital an act of “illegal detention,” stating that he was forcibly removed from Jantar Mantar to suppress a peaceful movement.

Early Saturday morning, the Delhi Police removed him from Jantar Mantar and admitted him to the emergency block of VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital. According to the police, this action was taken following directives from the Delhi High Court and medical advice. The court had ordered that regular medical monitoring and necessary treatment be ensured, given his deteriorating health.

Sonam Wangchuk had been on a hunger strike for 21 days
According to doctors, Wangchuk lost approximately 9.5 kilograms during his 21-day indefinite hunger strike, and he had developed an electrolyte imbalance. However, his supporters and family claim that despite being hospitalized, Wangchuk has so far refused to accept glucose, medication, or oral rehydration solutions.

Wangchuk’s movement seeks accountability for alleged paper leaks in various competitive examinations—including NEET—and demands the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Additionally, he is raising his voice against the crackdown on peaceful protests.

CJP Gears Up for Parliament March
Meanwhile, the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’—which is spearheading the movement—has made it clear that the ‘Chalo Sansad’ (March to Parliament) rally, scheduled for July 20 (the opening day of the Parliament’s monsoon session), will go ahead regardless of the circumstances. Wangchuk’s wife has also indicated that if his health does not permit him to participate, she will step in to join the march and lead the movement herself.

On the other hand, in view of the parliamentary session, the Delhi Police has tightened security arrangements in the New Delhi area and around Safdarjung Hospital. Barricades have been erected at several locations, and police sources state that there is a very slim chance of the march being granted permission due to security concerns during the session. Nevertheless, the protesters remain steadfast in their plans and are busy preparing to ensure the success of the march to Parliament.
