MP: Orchha’s famous Jahangir Mahal to be renamed ‘Vir Singh Mahal’; CM hints at the change

Bhopal. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited Orchha on Monday. During his visit, he hinted that the famous Jahangir Mahal might be renamed ‘Vir Singh Mahal’. The CM noted that the palace was built by the Bundela ruler Raja Vir Singh, suggesting that the name should reflect this fact.

His statement has sparked a debate regarding Orchha’s historical heritage and names associated with the Mughal era. Mohan Yadav had arrived in Orchha to attend a meeting of the BJP state executive committee. While there, he offered prayers at the Ram Raja Sarkar Temple and inspected the ongoing development work at ‘Ram Raja Lok’. Later, while speaking to journalists, he shared his views on renaming Jahangir Mahal.

When asked if Jahangir Mahal would henceforth be known as Vir Singh Mahal, the CM answered in the affirmative. He reiterated that the palace was constructed by Raja Vir Singh and added that there are several aspects of history that need to be brought to light.

Narottam Mishra also extends support

Former Home Minister Narottam Mishra also backed the Chief Minister’s statement. He argued that the palace should bear the name of the person who built it. According to him, there is a need to rectify historical distortions regarding the heritage site.

What is the history of Jahangir Mahal?

Situated on the banks of the Betwa River, Orchha is renowned for its palaces and temples. Historians state that Raja Vir Singh built this palace in 1518 for his friend Jahangir (also known as Salim). However, Jahangir never actually resided there. Jahangir Mahal showcases a unique blend of Bundela and Mughal architectural styles.

The palace is distinguished by its round domes at the four corners and a large dome atop the high roof. The palace has approximately 236 rooms. Veer Singh Bundela was the fourth son of Raja Madhukar Shah. According to historians, Veer Singh opposed the Mughal Emperor Akbar but shared a deep friendship with Akbar’s son, Salim. This very friendship eventually led to the construction of the Jahangir Mahal.
