
New Delhi: The bail plea of Ranya Rao, accused in a serious gold smuggling case, has been rejected by the Special Court. She had filed a bail plea in the Special Court for Economic Offenses. The decision was given by Judge Vishwanath C Govdar, who refused to grant bail keeping in mind the seriousness of the charges.
Ranya Rao, who was arrested in a high-profile gold smuggling case, had appealed to the court for bail. Rejecting her plea, the court took into account the seriousness of the charges and the status of the investigation. Ranya will remain in judicial custody for the time being and her lawyers are now preparing to file a bail plea in the Sessions Court.
Ranya’s lawyer argued that the investigation of the case has been completed and now she should be released on bail so that she is able to strengthen her defense, but the court rejected the plea, holding that the charges are still serious and the judicial process needs to be followed.
Now Ranya Rao’s legal team is preparing to file an appeal in the Sessions Court. Until the decision of the Sessions Court comes, Ranya will have to remain in jail. This case has raised serious questions about the gold smuggling network and its impact and has also forced a new thinking on the security system in the country. Ranya Rao was arrested on March 4 for smuggling 14.8 kg of gold worth Rs 12 crore into India.
The Kannada actress was caught at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport while returning from Dubai. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized the gold hidden in a specially designed waist belt. Subsequent searches of her Bengaluru residence led to the seizure of gold jewelery worth Rs 2.06 crore and cash worth Rs 2.67 crore, taking the total seized assets to Rs 17.29 crore.
