Washington. US President Donald Trump has further intensified the economic front against India. Sources have said that the White House has appealed to European countries to also impose sanctions on India like the US has imposed. These include the ban that Europe should immediately stop all purchases of oil and gas from India.
Actually, the Trump administration wants Europe to also impose secondary tariffs on India, just like the US had warned that if India did not stop buying oil from Russia, then more stringent punitive duties would be imposed on it. From August 27, the US has also imposed a 50 percent tariff on India. However, no statement has come from any European leader regarding the tariff on India.
This development has come to light at a time when India has strongly objected to the 50% tariff imposed by President Donald Trump. India has taken the Western countries to task by saying that China is Russia’s largest oil buyer and Europe is also constantly buying energy products from Moscow, but both have never faced the tariff treatment that India is facing.
Trump is angry with European leaders: Sources
The US alleges that India is funding Moscow’s war by buying crude oil from Russia and thus promoting the Ukraine war. Sources also claimed that senior White House officials believe that some European leaders are publicly supporting President Trump’s efforts to end the Ukraine war, but behind the scenes they are trying to undermine the progress made between Trump and Putin at the Alaska summit.
A top White House official told Aaj Tak, “The White House is angry with European leaders because they are pressuring Ukraine to stick to unrealistic territorial concessions from Russia.”
Sources say that European leaders are advising Ukrainian President Zelensky not to make any concessions to Russia while waiting for a better deal. In such a situation, Trump’s inner circle believes that this maximalist approach is further provoking the war.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in the next two days on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin. US tariffs on India and the Russia-Ukraine war are likely to be the main topics of discussion in this meeting.
