New Delhi. America’s Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said on Tuesday that if Russia does not present a formal ceasefire proposal in the Russia-Ukraine War, then America can consider imposing new sanctions on it. He made this statement in front of the US Senate Foreign Affairs Committee.
Rubio said, “We have received information that Russia is preparing to give its conditions for ceasefire in writing, which will make further comprehensive talks possible. We are waiting for those conditions, only then will we be able to understand Putin’s intentions better.”
So sanctions will remain the only option?
When Rubio was asked whether America will impose new sanctions if Russia does not show interest in peace talks? He said, “If it becomes clear that Russia does not want peace and wants to continue the war, then the path of sanctions will have to be adopted.” However, Rubio also said that US President Donald Trump does not want to threaten any kind of sanctions at this time, because it can affect the ongoing diplomatic process. Rubio said, “The President believes that if sanctions are threatened now, Russia can back out of the talks.” Rubio also said that Trump is “fully committed” to ending this conflict and wants to maintain the ability to lead both sides to a peaceful solution. Rubio said – Trump is committed to peace talks He further said that Trump is fully committed to ending this conflict and wants to continue efforts to lead both sides to peace. Earlier on Monday, President Trump revealed that he had a two-hour long phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, after which Russia and Ukraine have agreed to start ‘immediate’ ceasefire and peace talks. He also said the Vatican, under the leadership of newly-elected Pope Leo XIV, is willing to host these talks. The initiative comes after the recent peace talks in Istanbul failed, although the two countries agreed to swap prisoners.
