Australia eliminated from T20 World Cup, rain dashes hopes, Zimbabwe advances to Super 8

New Delhi: The 32nd group stage match of the T20 World Cup 2026 was scheduled to be played between Zimbabwe and Ireland at the Pallekele Stadium in Sri Lanka, but rain forced the match to be cancelled. Rain continued throughout the match, preventing the toss from taking place. Ultimately, the match was abandoned without a single ball being bowled. With this match being cancelled, Zimbabwe advanced to the Super 8, while the Kangaroos’ journey in this World Cup ended.

Zimbabwe advances to Super 8 with five points
After the Zimbabwe vs. Ireland match was cancelled, both teams were divided into one point each. With this, Zimbabwe now has five points and Ireland three. Zimbabwe and Australia still have one more match each to play in the group stage. Even after winning that match, Australia will only be able to reach a maximum of four points, thus ending their World Cup campaign. Zimbabwe’s next match will be against Sri Lanka, and Australia’s next match will be against Oman.
