Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister at Dinner at Ajit Doval’s Residence; Shifting Dynamics Since the Advent of the New Government

April 08, 2026

New Delhi: The estrangement that had emerged between India and Bangladesh over the recent past now appears to be gradually receding. A significant and positive manifestation of this shift was witnessed in Delhi on Tuesday. India’s National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, hosted a special dinner at his residence in honor of Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Khalilur Rahman. This meeting holds particular significance as it marks the commencement of efforts to resolve the diplomatic strain that had persisted between the two nations for nearly the last 18 months.

This visit marks the first tour to India by a senior Bangladeshi minister since the formation of the new government in Bangladesh under the leadership of Tarique Rahman. According to the news agency PTI, Khalilur Rahman has arrived in Delhi for a three-day visit and was accorded a warm and enthusiastic welcome. The dinner hosted by Doval involved not merely a meal, but also extensive discussions aimed at giving a fresh start to the friendship between the two countries. Although no official statement regarding the meeting has been issued yet, observers suggest that both sides are fully prepared to inject fresh momentum into their bilateral relations.

Relations between India and Bangladesh had deteriorated significantly following the collapse of Sheikh Hasina’s government in August 2024 and the subsequent installation of an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. However, the situation is now undergoing a transformation. When Tarique Rahman took the oath as Prime Minister, senior Indian leaders traveled to Bangladesh to attend the ceremony. Now, Khalilur Rahman has arrived in Delhi to carry those initial conversations forward.

  • Potential Discussions on Key Issues
The question now arises: what tangible outcomes can be expected from this visit? In essence, on Wednesday, the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister is scheduled to hold detailed discussions with his Indian counterpart, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The primary agenda of this meeting is the improvement of bilateral relations and the restoration of mutual trust. Additionally, discussions may focus on extending the Ganges Water Treaty, which is set to expire this year. Furthermore, issues such as trade and the supply of diesel and petrol are also likely to feature in the talks. Bangladesh seeks additional fuel supplies from India and requests a slight relaxation of visa regulations for Indian nationals to facilitate easier cross-border movement for both traders and the general public.

Another major issue that frequently features in discussions concerns former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India since August of last year, and the new government in Bangladesh is pressing for her extradition (return). However, India has not yet issued a direct response regarding this matter. Significantly, no political statements have recently emerged from Sheikh Hasina’s side—a development being interpreted as an attempt to foster a spirit of accommodation.

The most positive development is that, just prior to Khalilur Rahman’s arrival in India, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced a grant of 6.5 crore Taka for five temples located in his constituency. This gesture is being viewed as a highly positive signal to India, given that India has consistently raised the issue of the safety and security of minorities residing in Bangladesh. All in all, this visit is not merely a diplomatic meeting; rather, it marks a robust beginning for these two neighboring nations to join hands once again, leaving behind past disputes and moving forward together.
