New Delhi: Nitish Kumar may become the Chief Minister of Bihar for the 10th time. The Bihar election results show the NDA returning to power in Bihar with a landslide majority. It’s rare in Indian politics for a politician to enjoy such a long period of public support. However, Nitish Kumar has achieved this distinction. The cash transfer of 10,000 rupees to women’s accounts proved to be a turning point in ensuring Nitish Kumar’s 10th term.
The scheme of transferring 10,000 rupees to women’s accounts proved to be a decisive turnaround factor for Nitish Kumar in the Bihar elections, as it strengthened the confidence of women voters in his favor and weakened the opposition’s strategy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually launched this scheme on the 26th of last month. On this occasion, he transferred 10,000 rupees each to the bank accounts of 7.5 million women beneficiaries. This figure later increased to 15 million. The Bihar NDA named this scheme the Chief Minister Women’s Employment Scheme. The Nitish government claimed that it was launched to promote self-employment.
On August 29, 2025, just before the elections, the scheme received approval from the Nitish cabinet. The opposition then accused the government of vote-buying, but the election results showed that this scheme reversed the anti-incumbency factor against the Nitish government. This scheme proved to be a game-changer in the elections. Under this scheme, 10,000 rupees were transferred to the accounts of 15 million women. The number of women voters in Bihar is approximately 36 million. 15 million women benefited from the Women’s Employment Scheme, which benefited the NDA.
It should be noted that more than 71 percent of the total women voters voted in this election, benefiting the NDA. If this 10,000 rupees fund went into the accounts of 15 million women, it indirectly impacted approximately 4 to 5 crore families. In this way, not only the women who received the 10,000 rupees, but also other women in their families voted for the NDA. It can be said that this scheme helped Nitish and the BJP garner a significant vote. According to this scheme, women do not have to repay this 10,000 rupee amount, meaning it is not a loan. It is given to women to create employment opportunities.
Nitish Kumar has a long history of delivering schemes in favor of women. These include free bicycles, prohibition, scholarships, 50 percent reservation in Panchayat seats, and 35 percent reservation in government jobs. This time, Nitish Kumar not only promised the 10,000 rupees in cash but also delivered. This helped Nitish develop a trust chain with women, resulting in a strong turnout.
Nitish Kumar has served as Chief Minister of Bihar nine times so far. The 10th term awaits him. He is one of India’s longest-serving Chief Ministers, spanning over 20 years. Nitish Kumar first became Chief Minister of Bihar on March 3, 2000, for seven days. This was a minority government, and Nitish Kumar was forced to resign. After a year-long wait, Nitish returned to power in March 2005. In November 2005, he returned with an absolute majority. He became Chief Minister for the third time in 2010. He then separated from the BJP in 2014. With the Grand Alliance’s landslide victory in 2015, Nitish returned. In 2017, he once again parted ways with the Grand Alliance and joined the NDA.
