Colonel Shrikant Purohit Promoted to Brigadier; Retirement Put on Hold

April 10, 2026

New Delhi: The Indian Army has approved the promotion of Colonel Shrikant Purohit to the rank of Brigadier. Colonel Purohit has been embroiled in a prolonged legal battle and controversies for a considerable period. The decision to grant him this promotion was taken following a hearing regarding his petition.

Colonel Purohit was scheduled to retire on March 31, 2026; however, the Armed Forces Tribunal considered his petition for promotion and subsequently stayed his retirement.

Receiving this promotion after a long journey spanning 17 years could prove to be a turning point in Colonel Purohit’s life. He has successfully carved a niche for himself as a senior commander, having risen from the status of an accused in a high-profile blast case.

His career had come to a complete standstill following his arrest in connection with the 2008 Malegaon blast case. Although he returned to active service in 2017 after securing bail from the Supreme Court, his seniority and promotion remained in limbo for years.

  • A New Direction Following Acquittal
On July 31, 2025, a Special NIA Court in Mumbai acquitted Colonel Purohit of all charges. The court cited a lack of evidence and contradictions within the prosecution’s case as the grounds for the acquittal. Subsequently, in September 2025, he was promoted to the rank of full Colonel.

Colonel Purohit was slated to retire on March 31, 2026. However, on March 16, 2026, a bench headed by Justice Rajendra Menon ruled that Purohit had a strong case for receiving benefits and promotions on par with his juniors. The Tribunal ordered that his retirement be deferred until his grievances regarding the promotion were resolved.

According to sources, the Army’s approval of the Brigadier rank serves, in a way, as compensation for the years he lost while undergoing imprisonment and trial. Had his career not been interrupted, his batchmates would have reached senior leadership positions by now. Under normal circumstances, he could have attained the rank of Major General by this time.
