Congo’s Ebola Crisis Deepens: Death Toll Crosses 1,000, WHO Warns Actual Cases May Be Four Times Higher

Accra/Kinshasa: The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has turned into one of the deadliest health emergencies in recent years, with the death toll surpassing 1,000. Health officials say the outbreak is spreading at an alarming pace, making it the fastest-growing Ebola epidemic on record.

Addressing a health conference in Ghana on Wednesday, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Director-General Dr. Jean Kaseya confirmed that 1,031 people have died due to the outbreak. He warned that the crisis is being worsened by a severe shortage of vaccines, medicines, and financial resources.

“People are dying because we lack vaccines, medicines, and funds,” Dr. Kaseya said.

According to the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ministry of Health, 2,473 Ebola cases had been reported as of Monday. At least 737 patients are currently in isolation or receiving treatment in hospitals.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has cautioned that the actual number of infections could be two to four times higher than official figures. The outbreak, which began on May 15, is spreading so rapidly that health authorities are struggling to identify and isolate new cases in time.

Health officials have also raised concerns that nearly 80% of newly reported infections are emerging outside known transmission chains, indicating widespread community transmission and making contact tracing increasingly difficult.

Ebola is a rare but highly dangerous viral disease that can cause severe illness and death. The virus spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, including blood, vomit, sweat, and semen. Although vaccines and supportive treatments are available in some situations, there is no universally effective cure, making early detection and containment critical to controlling the outbreak.
