New Delhi: Folk singer Maithili Thakur joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday. According to party sources, she may contest the Bihar Assembly elections from the Alinagar seat in Darbhanga. In this scenario, the ticket of sitting MLA Mishrilal Yadav from the Alinagar seat is almost certain to be denied. Furthermore, the BJP may also make Maithili Thakur the face of its campaign, given her large social media fan base and popularity in the Mithila region. If Maithili Thakur receives the ticket, it will be the first time a renowned singer associated with Bihar’s folk culture will directly enter the political arena.
Maithili recently met senior BJP leader and Organization General Secretary Vinod Tawde, sparking speculation about her joining the party. Speaking to Aaj Tak after the meeting, Maithili said that she had a half-hour conversation with BJP leaders and that the conversation had been positive. She also stated that she supports the NDA and that the BJP has always been her priority. Maithili stated that while she lives in Delhi for work, her soul is connected to Bihar. She wants to stay in Bihar and serve the people and contribute to its development.
On October 5th, BJP National General Secretary Vinod Tawde shared a photo with Maithili Thakur on his former Twitter handle, writing that Maithili Thakur, the daughter of a family that left Bihar when Lalu Prasad Yadav came to power in 1995, now wants to return after seeing the changing pace of Bihar. A resident of Darbhanga, Maithili Thakur is known for her folk music and Mithila culture and enjoys a large fan following on social media. This year, Maithili Thakur turned 25.
