Supreme Court Justice Alexander de Moraes, who is monitoring the case, said in his order that 70-year-old Bolsonaro violated the security instructions already imposed by the court. He posted content on social media through the accounts of his three MP sons, which was against the rules. On Sunday, Bolsonaro addressed his supporters in Rio de Janeiro from the mobile phone of his son and senator Flavio Bolsonaro.

Now this trial has come into the limelight as US President Donald Trump has directly blamed the judicial process going on against Bolsonaro for the 50% tariff on goods imported from Brazil. Trump is considered close to Bolsonaro. He has called this trial a “witch hunt”, which has further intensified the nationalist reaction in Brazilian politics.

After the news of the house arrest order came out on Monday, a staffer of Brazil’s Federal Police said that agents have arrived at Bolsonaro’s house in Brasilia to confiscate mobile phones. This action is being taken on the orders of the court. Bolsonaro will now remain under house arrest in Brasilia and is not allowed to travel. He also has a house in Rio de Janeiro, where he was an MP for three decades.
