Kolkata. A fire has been reported in a hotel in Falpatti Machhua in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, in which about 14 people have died. According to the agency, a senior police officer said, “A fire broke out in a hotel near Falpatti Machhua in central Kolkata on Tuesday. About 14 people have died in the accident.”

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, while talking to reporters, said, “This fire incident took place in the premises of Rituraj Hotel at around 8:15 pm. Fourteen bodies have been recovered and many people have been rescued by the teams.”

According to reports, ten fire engines brought the fire under control, but emergency services faced difficulties in working in the crowded area of ​​Burrabazar, eastern India’s largest wholesale market. During the fire, many people tried to escape through the windows and narrow walls of the building. The police commissioner said that rescue operations are underway and a special team has been formed to investigate the incident.

Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar has urged the state government to immediately rescue the affected people and called for ‘strict monitoring’ of fire safety measures to prevent such tragic incidents in future.

He said in a social media post, “I urge the state administration to immediately rescue the affected people, ensure their safety and provide them with necessary medical and humanitarian assistance. Reacting to the incident, West Bengal Congress president Subhankar Sarkar criticised the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Sarkar told ANI, “It is a tragic incident, a fire broke out. A lot of people were trapped in the building. There was no security. I don’t know what the corporation is doing.”
