India-Pakistan War Possible in 2026, US Think Tank Warns; Both Countries Increase Arms Purchases

December 30, 2025

New Delhi: A war between India and Pakistan is possible in 2026, according to a warning issued by the American think tank Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). In its report titled ‘Conflicts to Watch in 2026,’ the think tank stated that the increasing terrorist activities make another war between India and Pakistan likely.

It is worth noting that India and Pakistan also clashed for four days in May. During this time, drones and missiles were fired at each other. Pakistani terrorists attacked tourists in Pahalgam, killing 26 people. In response, India launched ‘Operation Sindoor,’ destroying several Pakistani military installations. A ceasefire was then declared. Since then, there have been no major terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. However, according to sources, information has emerged that more than 30 Pakistani terrorists are hiding in the Jammu region this winter.

Despite the ceasefire, both India and Pakistan are rapidly acquiring weapons. India’s Defence Acquisition Council recently approved the purchase of defense equipment worth Rs 79,000 crore, including drones, air-to-air missiles, and guided bombs. Similarly, Pakistan is in talks with Turkey and China for new drones and air defense systems. Pakistan made this decision after suffering a setback in ‘Operation Sindoor.’

The report also pointed to another potential conflict involving Pakistan. It stated that a war between Afghanistan and Pakistan is also possible in 2026. The reason cited is the increasing militant attacks from across the border. In October, there was considerable tension between Pakistan and the Taliban, with significant cross-border firing. Afghanistan accused Pakistan of bombing Kabul. Meanwhile, Islamabad claimed that the Taliban had given refuge to the terrorists who attacked it. This has since affected diplomatic relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Notably, on Monday, approval was given for Rs 79,000 crore for weapons and other equipment for the three armed forces. The aim is to enhance the strength of the three services and further strengthen their capabilities. The greatest focus was on the next-generation Airborne Early Warning and Control System. The Defence Acquisition Council meeting also discussed that if the country’s three armed forces use more and more indigenously manufactured weapons, the number of buyers of Indian-made weapons in other countries will increase significantly.
