New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has reacted to the statement of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which said that America and Europe have targeted India for importing oil from Russia, while America itself continues to import uranium hexafluoride, palladium, fertilizers and chemicals from Russia. Trump said, “I don’t know about it, I will investigate it.”
The Ministry of External Affairs had said in its statement on Tuesday that after the Ukraine war started, the US and the European Union had raised questions on India buying oil from Russia. At that time, the US itself had encouraged India to continue such imports, so that the stability of the global energy market remains.
The Ministry of External Affairs had shown the mirror to Trump that the US continues to import uranium hexafluoride from Russia for its nuclear industry, palladium for its EV industry, and fertilizers as well as chemicals. The Indian Foreign Ministry had said that in such a situation, targeting India is unfair and impractical. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests and economic security.
MEA had also given a befitting reply to Europe
India had also replied to Europe that its bilateral trade in goods with Russia in 2024 was 67.5 billion euros. Apart from these, trade in services was estimated at 17.2 billion euros in 2023. This is much more than India’s total trade with Russia that year or thereafter.
Europe also needs to look within itself
The Indian Foreign Ministry said that Europe’s LNG imports from Russia reached a record level of 16.5 million tonnes in 2024, surpassing the previous record of 15.21 million tonnes in 2022. At the same time, Europe-Russia trade includes not only energy, but also fertilizers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel, and machinery and transport equipment. For example, Europe also needs to look within itself.
