February 13, 2026

New Delhi: Following the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s landslide victory in the 13th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly congratulated Tarique Rahman. In a message shared on social media, PM Modi described this victory as a testament to the Bangladeshi people’s unwavering faith in his leadership.

Prime Minister Modi wrote, “I heartily congratulate Tarique Rahman on leading the BNP to a decisive victory in the parliamentary elections. This victory reflects the Bangladeshi people’s trust in your leadership.” He further stated that India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh and looks forward to working together to strengthen the shared development goals of both countries.

  • This was the first major election in Bangladesh since Sheikh Hasina’s ouster. The return of Tarique Rahman’s party to power after 17 years of exile is a major turning point in South Asian politics. Through this congratulatory message, India has clearly indicated that it will prioritize strong bilateral relations with the new government.

Votes for the general elections were cast in Bangladesh on Thursday, and counting began this evening. Results so far show Rahman’s coalition winning 209 seats, securing a two-thirds majority in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad, or House of Assembly.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, claiming victory in the elections, congratulated the countrymen but urged supporters not to celebrate. The party urged workers and supporters across the country to offer Friday prayers and remember former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia instead of celebrating.
