Iran Launches Massive Retaliation: Missile Attack on Israel’s ‘Dimona’ Nuclear City

March 22, 2026

New Delhi: The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran has now escalated to include nuclear sites. Following an Israeli attack on Natanz, Iran has launched a massive retaliatory strike. The Israeli military (IDF) has confirmed that ballistic missiles fired by Iran on Saturday struck the Israeli cities of Arad and Dimona.

Just this Saturday, the U.S. and Israel had carried out an airstrike on Iran’s largest nuclear facility at Natanz; the subsequent missile attacks on Arad and Dimona are now being viewed as a direct act of retaliation for that strike. It is noteworthy that the city of Dimona is home to Israel’s highly sensitive nuclear research center. According to Israel’s emergency medical service, Magen David Adom (MDA), their teams immediately mobilized for relief operations following the attack.

  • More than 100 people have been injured across various parts of Dimona—a figure confirmed by Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A video of the incident is also circulating online, appearing to show an Iranian missile striking a specific location within Dimona. Most of the injuries were sustained either from missile shrapnel or from falls while people were rushing toward bunkers for safety. Among the injured is a 10-year-old boy who sustained shrapnel wounds and is currently in moderate condition.

Dimona: A City of Significant Strategic Importance

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has stated that it is aware of the incident involving a missile strike in the Israeli city of Dimona; however, the agency has received no indications of any damage to the Negev Nuclear Research Center. According to the IAEA, information received from countries in the region indicates that no abnormal levels of radiation have been detected anywhere. The agency continues to closely monitor the situation. Israeli officials state that they are investigating how an Iranian missile managed to breach their air defense system and reach the southern city of Dimona. Located approximately 13 kilometers from Dimona is a nuclear facility, which has long been believed to be linked to Israel’s undeclared stockpile of nuclear weapons.

Officially, the facility is described as being dedicated solely to research; however, for nearly six decades, it has been widely believed that this is the very site where Israel developed its nuclear bomb. Consequently, Israel is taking the targeting of this area with extreme seriousness.

*A War of ‘Retaliation’ Over Nuclear Sites*
Iran’s state television has characterized this attack as a “decisive response” to the Israeli strike on the Natanz nuclear complex. Earlier, Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization had reported that the Natanz enrichment facility had been targeted, although there were no reports of any radioactive leakage at the site.

Now, by directly targeting Israel’s “nuclear city,” Iran has pushed the conflict in a new and potentially catastrophic direction. Following this attack, tensions in the Middle East have escalated further, and the military confrontation between the two nations is intensifying. In light of the situation, a state of high alert has been declared across the entire region.
