New Delhi: Amidst the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, US President Donald Trump has made a startling claim. He stated that Iran has presented the United States with a “very big gift”—one linked to the Strait of Hormuz. However, he did not provide full details regarding the nature of this gift.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office at the White House, Trump said, “They [Iran] gave us a gift, and it arrived today. It is very big, and it is very valuable. It is not related to nuclear matters, but rather to oil and gas. They did a very good thing by doing this.”
It is worth noting that the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, through which ships carrying vast quantities of global energy supplies pass. Consequently, any form of disruption in this region has repercussions across the entire global oil market. In recent months, rising tensions between the US-Israel axis and Iran have exacerbated instability in this area.
Recently, Iran has created blockade-like conditions along this route. Furthermore, it has targeted vessels belonging to several nations, resulting in thousands of ships laden with oil and gas becoming stranded at sea. As a result, shortages of oil and gas have begun to emerge worldwide, leading to a surge in oil and gas prices across numerous countries.
‘Iran Wants a Deal Too’
Trump also stated that dialogue between the United States and Iran is ongoing. He claims that Iran is now speaking reasonably and is prepared to reach an agreement. He remarked, “We are talking right now. They [Iran] want to make a deal too. US officials are in contact with the right people in Tehran.”
He further revealed that prominent leaders, such as JD Vance and Marco Rubio, are part of these negotiations. Trump believes that Iran now wishes to end the conflict and that the two sides are very close to finalizing a major agreement. However, he did not clarify whether U.S. representatives are scheduled to hold any formal talks this week.
Trump also claimed that Iran has acknowledged that it will never develop nuclear weapons. He stated, “We made it clear that they must not possess nuclear weapons, and they have accepted this.”
Reiterating his stance, Trump remarked that he believes the United States has already won this conflict. He also hinted that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was disappointed by how swiftly the campaign concluded. He said, “Pete didn’t want this matter to be resolved so quickly.”
Trump also spoke of regime change in Iran.
Furthermore, Trump stated that U.S. military forces are openly operating over Tehran and that the United States is achieving tremendous success in this conflict. He went so far as to suggest that a new leadership situation is now emerging in Iran—a development that could be viewed as a form of regime change—given that their former leaders are no longer effective.
According to Trump, the United States had planned to strike a major power plant but halted the operation in light of ongoing negotiations. He said, “We could have targeted a very large power plant, but we refrained from doing so because of the talks.”
Trump also claimed that Iran has few anti-aircraft systems or missiles remaining. He asserted that the United States holds a strong position in this conflict. Additionally, he commended Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, noting that these nations have provided excellent cooperation regarding the issue of Iran.
However, there has been no clear response from Iran thus far regarding these claims made by Trump.
