New Delhi: Jasprit Bumrah has been named the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year 2024. The ICC released a new list of awards for 2024 on Monday. Two Indian stars are included in this list. While Bumrah has been named the best Test cricketer, Smriti Mandhana has been awarded the Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year. Bumrah is the first Indian cricketer to win this award after 2018. Virat Kohli was named Test Cricketer of the Year in 2018.
The ICC released the names of the best cricketers of different formats in 2024. The ICC had nominated four players in each format for these awards a few days ago. After this, the winner was selected on the basis of voting. Jasprit Bumrah was everyone’s choice for the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year. Bumrah won this award by defeating England’s Joe Root, Harry Brook and Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis.
Jasprit Bumrah has had a great performance in 2024. He took 71 wickets in 13 Test matches this year at an average of 14.92. The Indian team may not have won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on the Australia tour, but Bumrah dominated here too. He was given the Player of the Series award for taking the most wickets in the series. Joe Root scored 1556 runs in 17 Tests in 2024 and Harry Brook scored 1100 runs in 12 Tests. Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis scored 1049 runs in 9 Tests.
Smriti Mandhana left behind Laura Wolvaardt, Chamari Atapattu and Annabel Sutherland to win the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year 2024 award. Mandhana scored 747 runs with the help of 4 centuries in 13 ODIs this year. The rest of the players could not even come close to her performance.
