New Delhi: Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Monday categorically rejected US President Donald Trump’s offer of talks. Khamenei also refuted Trump’s claim that the US had destroyed Iran’s nuclear centers by bombing them. He said that any agreement reached through coercion or threats is not a compromise but rather a form of pressure and intimidation.
Earlier, after the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, Trump had said in the Israeli Parliament that a peace agreement between Washington and Tehran would be great. He raised the possibility of talks, but Khamenei rejected this, saying, “America proudly claims it destroyed Iran’s nuclear industry. Well, keep dreaming!” He clearly stated that whether Iran has nuclear facilities or not, US interference in its affairs is wrong and an imposition.
Western countries, especially the US, accuse Iran of secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons. However, Iran repeatedly maintains that its nuclear program is purely peaceful and solely for energy production.
Nuclear talks have been held five times between the US and Iran in the past few years, but these talks were not particularly successful. These talks were halted after a 12-day air strike in June, when Israel and the US attacked some of Iran’s nuclear sites.
This entire situation has further tensed the atmosphere in the Middle East. The issue remains unresolved between the two countries, and further talks or resolution appear difficult due to the lack of trust between the two.
