Locked in rooms and burnt alive, shot… Brutal attack by gunmen in Nigeria, 100 people killed

Abuja: At least 100 people were killed in an attack by gunmen in Yelewata village in Central Benue State, Nigeria. This information was given by Amnesty International Nigeria on Saturday. The organization said that the attack continued from late Friday night to early Saturday.

Amnesty said in a statement on social media platform X, ‘Many people are still missing. Dozens are injured and are not getting adequate medical help. Many families were locked in their rooms and burnt alive.’

Most of the victims are farmers
Amnesty International said that incidents of attacks are increasing rapidly in Benue State and gunmen are killing people with complete impunity. Due to these attacks, people have been forced to leave their homes on a large scale and since most of the victims are farmers, this also poses a threat to food security.

Tension remains between herders and farmers
Benue State is located in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where the Muslim-majority north and Christian-majority south meet. There has long been a conflict between herders and farmers in this region over land use. Herders are looking for pastures for their cattle, while farmers want land for farming.
