New Delhi: Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on the night of December 27. This attack comes at a time when a crucial meeting is scheduled between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding peace talks, and diplomatic efforts to end the war are intensifying.
The Ukrainian capital Kyiv was hit by a massive Russian missile and drone attack on the night of December 27. Several loud explosions were heard in the capital and surrounding areas. This attack occurred just one day before the proposed meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, while diplomatic efforts to end the war are underway.
According to a report by the Kyiv Independent, Russia launched a large-scale ballistic missile attack on Kyiv. During this attack, Russia fired several Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, four Iskander ballistic missiles, and several Kalibr cruise missiles.
Explosions Heard
The report stated that several explosions were heard in the capital Kyiv as well as in the surrounding Kyiv Oblast region. In the city of Brovary, located about 20 kilometers northeast of Kyiv, the attacks disrupted the power supply, plunging the city and surrounding areas into darkness.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the attack in a post on Telegram and appealed to people to stay in safe places. He wrote, “Explosions in the capital. Air defense systems are working. Everyone stay in shelters.”
The Ukrainian Air Force also issued several emergency warnings. According to the Air Force, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) were detected operating in Kyiv and surrounding areas. The Air Force reported that drones were spotted over Kyiv, while drone activity was also recorded in the western areas of the villages of Velyka Dymerka and Pereyaslav in the Kyiv region, moving southwards.
Trump-Zelenskyy Meeting Scheduled
This attack on Kyiv comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed a meeting with US President Donald Trump. The meeting is scheduled for Sunday in Florida, where Trump is playing a mediating role in ending the war.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Zelenskyy said the meeting could advance negotiations towards a resolution of the conflict, although he also clarified that a final agreement should not be expected immediately. According to CNN, Zelenskyy said both sides would focus on resolving as many outstanding issues as possible.
Zelenskyy also revealed that a 20-point peace proposal drafted by US and Ukrainian officials is 90 percent complete. He said the talks with Trump would include discussions on long-term security guarantees for Ukraine and the role of partner countries in ensuring post-war stability.
However, in an interview, Donald Trump stated that his approval would be necessary for any peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. According to Politico, Trump said, “Without my approval, he has nothing. Let’s see what he comes up with.”
Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that its forces are advancing on the front lines in southern Ukraine. According to the ministry, Russia has continued large-scale attacks on Ukrainian territory, which it says are in response to alleged Ukrainian attacks on civilian targets within Russia.
