MP: Union Carbide waste will be burnt at 850 degree Celsius temperature in Pithampur today

Pithampur. 39 years after the Bhopal gas tragedy, preparations are underway to burn the chemical waste of Union Carbide factory in Pithampur today. More than 300 and a half metric tonnes of waste has been brought here. Security has been tightened in view of local protests. To destroy this waste safely, a special incinerator (bhatti) is being used, whose temperature will be taken up to 850 degrees Celsius. This entire operation is being monitored by the team of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB).


Special precautions are being taken to burn this toxic waste of Union Carbide. The waste has been packed in small 9-kg bags. 4.5 kg of garbage and 4.5 kg of lime have been mixed in each bag to control the burning process. It takes 12 hours to heat the incinerator, so it was started from 10 pm last night. 400 liters of diesel will be consumed every hour to keep the incinerator burning and maintain its temperature.

10 tons of garbage will be burnt in three days
The process of burning this toxic waste can be started any time after 10 am today. A total of 10 tons of garbage will be burnt in this phase, which will take about three days to be completely eliminated. The ash, gas, solid particles and water emitted during this process will be disposed of scientifically. Finally, the remaining ash will be safely buried in the landfill site. Let us tell you that the local people are protesting against the burning of this garbage in Pithampur, in view of this, security arrangements have been tightened here. The government claims that the garbage is no longer poisonous.

This toxic waste of Union Carbide has been in controversy for a long time, and the process of burning it is being carried out with utmost caution. Yesterday, samples of different wastes were taken out from 5 out of 12 containers and kept in the storage yard near the incinerator. This entire process is taking place at the Ramki Enviro factory in Pithampur, where the CPCB and MPPCB teams are keeping an eye on every step. It is also being seen that the environment is not harmed by any toxic element.
