April 13, 2026

Patna: The process to select a new Chief Minister in Bihar has intensified. Nitish Kumar is set to tender his resignation tomorrow—Tuesday—following the final cabinet meeting. The swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister will take place at Lok Bhawan on April 15 at 11:00 AM. The Governor’s Secretary, Gopal Meena, has convened a meeting to oversee the preparations. Prior to this, the BJP Legislative Party is scheduled to meet tomorrow—Tuesday—at 2:00 PM.

This meeting will be held at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s office. All MLAs, along with Union Agriculture Minister and designated observer Shivraj Singh Chouhan, will be present at the meeting. The leader of the BJP Legislative Party will be elected during this session. The elected leader of the legislative party will subsequently become the Chief Minister. Following this, a meeting of the NDA Legislative Party will be held at 4:00 PM in the evening. During the NDA meeting, Nitish Kumar himself is expected to propose the name of the new Chief Minister.

  • Claim to Form Government to be Staked Tomorrow Itself
Before these proceedings, Nitish Kumar will visit the Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation. Under the leadership of the NDA Legislative Party leader, the formal claim to form the government will be staked tomorrow itself. On Monday, a meeting of senior JDU leaders and ministers was held at the Chief Minister’s residence, during which discussions were held regarding the party’s role in the new government and the post of Deputy Chief Minister.

Earlier in the morning, JDU Executive President Sanjay Jha, Union Minister Lalan Singh, Minister Jama Khan, and senior leader Bijendra Yadav met with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. This meeting, which lasted for approximately one hour at the Chief Minister’s residence, involved deliberations on various issues related to government formation.

Nitish Remains Active on His Final Day in Office
In fact, today marks Nitish Kumar’s last full day as Chief Minister; even on this final day in office, he remains actively engaged in reviewing development projects across Bihar. As soon as Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar departed from his official residence with his convoy in the afternoon, a flurry of speculation began. Observers wondered: Was Nitish heading to the Raj Bhavan? Was he going to placate someone? Was he going to finalize the cabinet? Instead, Nitish Kumar traveled via the JP Setu to Bakarpur in Chhapra, where he inspected ongoing construction work for a four-lane road and a bridge.
