Oslo. US President Donald Trump recently sent an extraordinary text message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressing his frustration at not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. In the message, Trump claimed that not receiving the award meant he was no longer obligated to think only about peace and would prioritize American interests. He also reiterated his demand for complete control over Greenland. Now, the Norwegian PM has responded to Trump.
According to Støre, Trump claimed in the message that not receiving the award had changed his approach to global affairs and alliance politics. Støre clarified that the decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize is made by an independent Nobel Committee, not the Norwegian government. He said, “I confirm that I received this text message from President Trump yesterday afternoon. I have explained clearly to President Trump several times, as everyone knows, that the Nobel Prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee, not by the Norwegian government.”
Trump’s message came after tariff dispute
The Norwegian Prime Minister explained that the message was in response to a brief message he had sent to Trump earlier that day. This message, sent on behalf of Norway and Finland, together with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, protested the proposed tariff increases on European countries by the US.
According to Støre, “We emphasized the need to de-escalate the tariff dispute and proposed a telephone conversation between Trump, Stubb, and myself that same day. President Trump’s response came shortly afterward. Sharing that message with other NATO leaders was Trump’s own decision.” Trump’s Claim: American Interests Now Take Precedence Over Peace
According to Støre, Trump’s message stated: “Dear Jonas, given that your country did not award me the Nobel Peace Prize despite my having prevented eight wars, I no longer feel obligated to think solely from a peace perspective, although peace remains paramount. Now I can also consider what is right and proper for America.”
US Reiterates Stance on Greenland
Trump’s message didn’t stop there. He reiterated the need for US control over Greenland. Questioning Denmark’s historical and legal claims, Trump asserted that Denmark is incapable of protecting the island from Russia or China. Trump wrote: “Why does Denmark have ‘ownership rights’ there? There is no written document – a boat landed there centuries ago, that’s the only basis. Our boats landed there too.” He also stated that the world will not be safe until the US has complete and total control over Greenland.
Norway’s Clear Stance: Support for Denmark, NATO’s Role
Jonas Gahr Støre reiterated that Norway’s position is crystal clear. “Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and Norway fully supports Denmark on this issue. We also believe that NATO should take responsible steps to ensure security and stability in the Arctic region.” Meanwhile, Trump has also warned that if the UK, EU countries, and some other countries do not agree to sell Greenland to the US, he may consider imposing tariffs of up to 10 percent on them. Norway and Finland have openly opposed this stance.
