New Delhi: The Donald Trump administration has issued a new directive to US consulates around the world. Under this, new appointments for student (F), business (M) and exchange visitor (J) visa interviews have been banned with immediate effect. This move is part of a larger plan to implement mandatory social media screening for foreign students. This information has come to light in a report by Politico, which cites documents signed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The document clearly states that with immediate effect, in preparation for the expansion of the required social media investigation, no new student or exchange visitor visa interview appointments should be scheduled until further guidance is received, which we expect in the coming days.

‘Threat to students…’
A post made from the US Embassy’s social media handle read, “If you are found to be a dropout, skip classes or leave your study program without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked and you may lose eligibility for a future US visa. To avoid any problems, always follow the terms of your visa and maintain your student status.” Earlier also, such decisions have been taken by the Trump administration, which directly affects students and people going to America.

Action on Harvard
Recently, the Trump administration revoked Harvard University’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification with immediate effect. Without this certification, Harvard cannot admit new foreign students and about 7 thousand foreign students currently studying will have to transfer to other universities, otherwise their visa status will be in danger.

The Trump administration has frozen Harvard’s $2.2 billion federal grant and additional funds of $450 million. The administration had demanded the university to discontinue diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, change admissions policies, and audit some academic programs related to the Middle East, which Harvard rejected.

‘Ban on lying…’
The US Embassy in India issued a notification on May 22, saying, “Criminal convictions can permanently bar you from entering the United States. Even minor crimes can trigger visa denial. Consulate officials have access to your criminal background and will look for previous violations or arrests.” The notification further said that tell the truth in your application and your interview, you can be banned if you lie.

‘Ban on Indian travel agencies…’
On May 20, the US Embassy issued a press statement warning travel agencies. During this, it was said, “The US promotes accountability for those who exploit, prey on and profit from vulnerable illegal immigrants. The State Department is imposing visa restrictions on the owners, officers and senior employees of travel agencies operating in India who knowingly profit by exploiting vulnerable immigrants.

This is how US travel can be banned
On May 17, the US Embassy issued a notification saying, “If you stay in the US for more than your authorized period, you may be deported and in the future, a permanent ban may be imposed on travel to the US.”

Action will be taken on visa fraud
On May 15, the US Embassy said, “The US government has launched an inter-agency effort to deal with fraud and eliminate illegal immigration. Those found guilty of visa fraud will face a permanent ban from entering the US. The new visa restriction policies apply to individuals and foreign governments that facilitate illegal immigration.”

The US has deported nearly 700 Indians to New Delhi since January 2025 under President Trump’s deportation orders. According to data released by the Indian Foreign Ministry, 682 Indian nationals were deported from the US, most of whom had entered the country illegally.
