Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif Issues a Hollow Threat: “If India Acts, We Will Attack Kolkata…”

New Delhi: Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated significantly in recent days. This surge in tension began with the Pahalgam attack, which took place on April 22 of last year. Following that attack, a four-day skirmish ensued between the two nations. Since then, a standoff has persisted between the two countries. And now, once again, strong statements have begun to emanate from both sides.

On Saturday, Pakistan’s Defense Minister, Khawaja Asif, was speaking to journalists in his hometown of Sialkot. Sialkot is located approximately 130 kilometers from Lahore. He stated that if India were to launch an “operation under the guise of a dramatic conspiracy,” Pakistan would strike directly as far as Kolkata.

Khawaja Asif claims to have intelligence suggesting that India is currently hatching such a conspiracy. He alleges that certain bodies would be planted, and it would then be claimed that these individuals were terrorists who carried out the act. However, he provided no evidence to substantiate this claim. On Thursday as well, Asif had stated that if India were to launch an attack, Pakistan’s response would be “swift, calculated, and resolute.”

What Did India Say?
India’s Defense Minister, Rajnath Singh, had previously stated that if the neighboring country were to take any misstep, India’s response would be “unprecedented and decisive”—meaning a response unlike any ever witnessed before. Khawaja Asif’s statement has come in direct response to this.

Rhetoric Intensifies
Both nations are openly issuing warnings to one another. India asserts that if a mistake is made, the consequences will be severe. Pakistan, in turn, declares that it is no less capable, going so far as to speak of reaching all the way to Kolkata.

The specific mention of Kolkata is significant because it is a city located in eastern India, situated a considerable distance from the Pakistani border. By invoking this name, Pakistan seeks to demonstrate that its reach extends not merely to the border but deep into Indian territory—a feat that, in reality, is not militarily feasible. Pakistan has long been issuing hollow threats merely to appease its domestic audience; this is nothing new.

This rhetoric is unfolding at a time when the entire West Asia region is already in turmoil, and an atmosphere of tension prevails across the globe. Such statements exchanged between two nuclear-armed nations plunge the entire world into anxiety. What exactly constitutes an “operation under a dramatic conspiracy”?
