Petrol and Diesel Sales Rise by Over 15% in the Last Two Days; HPCL Issues an Appeal to the Public

March 26, 2026

New Delhi: Although there is currently no shortage of petrol and diesel in the country amidst the Iran-Israel conflict, the general public appears to be in an unnecessary state of panic regarding the ongoing war in the Middle East. Consequently, the demand for petrol and diesel across the nation has witnessed a surge of over 15% in the last two days. In light of this increase, the state-run oil company, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), has issued a specific appeal to the public. Through this appeal, the company has urged citizens to refrain from making unnecessary purchases of petrol and diesel.

In this context, HPCL has also issued an important clarification on the social media platform ‘X’. The company noted on social media that a sudden surge in the demand for petrol and diesel has been observed across the country in recent days. Over the last two days, sales have recorded an increase of more than 15% at the pan-India level, while in certain locations, this figure has soared by over 50% compared to average daily sales. The state-run oil major, HPCL, made these significant facts public while issuing its clarification on the social media platform ‘X’.

  • It is worth noting that this information has emerged at a time when reports of panic buying—fueled by rumors—have surfaced in several states across the country. According to HPCL, all supply depots and retail outlets are maintaining extended operational hours and are promptly supplying petrol and diesel in accordance with demand, thereby ensuring fuel availability for all consumers.

The state-run oil company has appealed to consumers, assuring them that there are adequate reserves of petrol and diesel available within the country and that a robust supply chain remains fully secured. Consequently, consumers are urged to avoid panic-driven, unnecessary purchases, as such actions could lead to overcrowding and inconvenience.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Petroleum issued a statement on Thursday, noting that numerous countries across the globe are currently grappling with challenges such as price hikes, fuel rationing, ‘odd-even’ vehicle restrictions, and forced station closures. Some countries have declared a “national energy emergency,” but such a situation does not exist in India.
