
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held summit talks with his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba on Friday. The aim of this meeting was to further expand the overall bilateral relations between India and Japan, including in the areas of trade, investment and emerging technologies. Just hours after Prime Minister Modi reached the capital of Japan, the two leaders met for the 15th India-Japan summit.
Several agreements were signed between the two countries in this summit. PM Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba exchanged agreements. Both heads of state addressed a joint press conference. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba recalled his Varanasi visit 6 years ago. He said, ‘I had the privilege of visiting Varanasi in August 2019. I was overwhelmed to see the Indian history of time immemorial.’
Addressing the joint press conference, PM Modi said, ‘Today our discussions were useful and purposeful. We agree that as the world’s two largest economies and vibrant democracies, our partnership is essential not only for the two countries but also for global peace and security. Strong democracies are natural partners in building a better world. Today, we have laid the foundation for a new and golden chapter in our special strategic and global partnership. We have prepared a roadmap for the next decade. Investment, innovation, economic security, environment, technology, health, mobility and people-to-people exchanges are at the center of our vision.’
The Indian Prime Minister said that we have set a target of investing 10 trillion yen from Japan in India in the next 10 years. Special emphasis will be laid on connecting small and medium enterprises and startups of India and Japan. I also called upon Japanese companies to ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ at the India Japan Economic Forum. PM Modi said that cooperation in the high technology sector is a priority for India and Japan. In this regard, work is being done on Digital Partnership 2.0 and AI Cooperation Initiative. Semiconductors and rare earth minerals will be on top of our agenda.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, ‘We believe that Japanese technology and Indian talent are a winning combination. While we are working on high-speed rail, we will also make rapid progress in areas like ports, aviation and shipbuilding under the next generation mobility partnership. For cooperation in Chandrayaan 5 mission, we welcome the agreement between ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency- JAXA). Our active cooperation will transcend the boundaries of the earth and symbolize humanity’s progress in space.’
