Release of Pakistani prisoners for the first time after Operation Sindoor, 70 will cross Attari border

September 09, 2025

New Delhi. India will release 70 Pakistani prisoners. These prisoners will be released tomorrow i.e. Tuesday. Earlier also, Pakistani prisoners have been released many times by India after completing their sentence, but this will be the first release of prisoners after Operation Sindoor. These prisoners will be sent to Pakistan via Attari border. These prisoners were lodged in various jails of India in various cases.

There are some women and elderly people among them. Most of them had entered the Indian border illegally. Some people also came to Indian waters while fishing. Some were accused of violating visa rules. These prisoners will be handed over to Pakistani Rangers in the presence of various agencies at the Attari border.

Pakistan is also expected to release Indians
After the killing of innocent Indians by Pakistan-backed terrorists in the Pahalgam terror attack, India had severed all ties with Pakistan. After this, to take revenge for this attack, India taught Pakistan a befitting lesson by running Operation Sindoor. After this humanitarian initiative of the Indian government, it is expected that Pakistan will also release the Indian civilian prisoners, fishermen and their boats and missing defense personnel in its custody as soon as possible.

Both the countries had shared the list of prisoners through diplomatic channels
On July 3 this year, India and Pakistan shared the list of civilian prisoners and fishermen in each other’s custody through diplomatic channels. Under the provisions of the bilateral agreement on consular access in the year 2008, such lists are exchanged every year on January 1 and July 1. According to the official website of the Ministry of External Affairs, India has shared the names of 382 prisoners and 81 fishermen in its custody with Pakistan. These are the names, which are considered Pakistani. Similarly, Pakistan has shared the names of 53 prisoners and 193 fishermen in its custody, who according to Pakistan are Indians. 159 Indian fishermen and civilian prisoners in Pakistan have completed their sentence. Apart from this, India had demanded from Pakistan that it should provide immediate consular access to 26 Indian civilian prisoners and fishermen in Pakistan’s custody who are believed to be Indians.
