Caught while trying to enter the US through the donkey route
All these people were caught at the border while trying to enter the US using the ‘donkey route’. In a viral video, people were seen shackled in the first batch of illegal Indian immigrants deported from the US. Opposition parties had attacked the central government over this mistreatment of illegal Indian immigrants. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had assured the opposition in Parliament that the Indian government is contacting the Trump administration to ensure that Indians deported from the US are not mistreated in any way.

S. Jaishankar had confirmed that male deportees were handcuffed and chained, except for women and children. The External Affairs Minister said that all the deportees were given food and medicine during the flight. A political storm has arisen over the landing of special planes carrying deported Indians from the US in Amritsar. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has criticized the central government for landing the planes in Amritsar.

PM Modi had raised the issue of illegal immigration in the US
The BJP dismissed the controversy and said that the opposition is exaggerating the issue. During his recent visit to the US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of illegal immigration and human trafficking. In a joint press conference with Donald Trump, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, ‘People who live illegally in other countries have no legal right to stay there. As far as India and America are concerned, we have always said that people who are verified and are actually citizens of India – if they live illegally in America, India is ready to take them back.’
