October 20, 2025

New Delhi: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said he plans to form a strategic alliance with India to enhance political, economic, and technological cooperation. He made the announcement shortly after Vice President Geraldo Alckmin’s visit to India. He made this statement in a video message on the social media platform X.

In his message, Lula praised India’s potential and called it an exceptional partner for Brazil’s future development. He said that Vice President Geraldo Alckmin’s visit to India is very important in preparation for his visit early next year, as India has an exceptional market. We can build a great alliance with India, spanning the political, space, entrepreneurial, and economic sectors.

India and Brazil’s relations are strengthening amid rising global trade tensions. In August, US President Donald Trump decided to impose a 50% tax on several Brazilian goods, which already faced a 26.4% tax. Similarly, a 50% tariff was also imposed on Indian goods.

Brazilian President Lula stated that India and Brazil share a mutually respectful and friendly relationship. He stated that Indians love Brazil, and Brazilians love Indians. Therefore, we will build a strong strategic partnership with India and boost the economies of both countries. Prime Minister Modi met with Lula during the summit in July, during which a roadmap for stronger cooperation in trade, defense, and technology was established. Lula will visit India in early 2026.

Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin’s visit to India aims to strengthen trade relations and explore new opportunities for Brazilian companies interested in operating in the Indian market. President Lula said that Alckmin always brings him good news. He has brought many new developments from India, such as Embraer opening a new office in India, electronic visas to facilitate trade, and new partnerships.

During his meetings in India, Alckmin stated that India and Brazil’s economic relations are not about competition, but about mutual support. He stated that we are talking about two democratic countries that uphold multilateralism. Both countries have great potential for increased trade and investment. Alckmin pointed out that India is one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, with annual growth of approximately 7 percent. Meanwhile, Brazil’s agricultural production has increased by 16 percent this year. This creates excellent opportunities for cooperation in the fields of technology, industry, mining, and agriculture.
