The company building the world’s largest dam backed out, China in trouble, know

January 29, 2025

New Delhi. China’s government-owned company Three Gorges Corporation has withdrawn from the Grand Inga Dam Construction Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). The project claims to be the world’s largest hydropower plant, which can help solve Africa’s energy crisis. China’s move can give a big setback to the progress of the project.

The construction of the Grand Inga Dam is proposed on the Congo River and it was being developed as the world’s largest hydropower plant. The project was expected to have an estimated 40,000 megawatt power generation capacity, which could supply energy to the whole of Africa. However, the project has been continuously delayed over the past few decades and construction work never started.

Why did China withdraw?
The Three Gorges Corporation decided to withdraw from its participation. However, there has been no official statement regarding the reasons behind this decision. Experts believe that the cost of the project, government instability and concerns about the environment may be the main reasons for this decision. Also, there may be an impact of China’s changing priorities for other projects and investments.

Impact on the project
The Chinese company’s exit from this project is being seen as a big sign that the future of the project may now be even more uncertain. This project can cause a major dispute between the Congo government and international investors, especially when the estimated cost of the project is around $ 80 billion. DR Congo is already facing government instability and allegations of corruption, which can make the construction work even more difficult.

Solution to Africa’s energy crisis?
The importance of this project was extremely high in view of Africa’s energy crisis. Millions of people in Africa are living without electricity and only projects like the Grand Inga Dam could meet Africa’s electricity needs. However, despite the project’s promising performance, China’s withdrawal from the project could prove to be a major setback for Africa.

The question now arises whether the Congolese government and other international partners will be able to restart the project. Although the Congolese government has claimed that work on the project is ongoing, the Three Gorges Corporation’s exit from the project could create further difficulties in realizing this big dream.
