The ‘Inflation Bomb’ Explodes Here Too: Now, Your Bread Breakfast Will Cost More

May 19, 2026

New Delhi: For the past week, the country has witnessed a continuous series of “inflation bombs” exploding on a daily basis. Following price hikes in petrol, diesel, CNG, and milk, even consuming bread has now become more expensive. Bread manufacturing companies have initiated a trend of price increases, delivering a fresh shock of inflation to consumers. In Mumbai, one company has hiked the price of a packet of bread by a significant ₹5 in a single move, and there are apprehensions that other companies may soon follow suit with similar price hikes.

Modern Bread Hikes Prices
In Mumbai, Modern Bread has launched an “inflationary assault” on its customers by implementing a substantial increase in bread prices. The company has raised the prices of its basic variants. According to reports, this price hike by Modern Bread has been effective on its basic variants since May 16, and it is anticipated that other brands, such as Britannia and Wibs, may soon take similar measures.

  • Here Are the New Prices for Bread
Bread Type | Previous Price | Current Price
    400g Sandwich Bread | ₹40 | ₹45
    Whole Wheat Bread | ₹55 | ₹60
    Multigrain Bread | ₹60 | ₹65
    Small Brown Bread | ₹28 | ₹30
    White Bread | ₹20 | ₹22
    Brown Bread | ₹45 | ₹50

This hike in bread prices comes just days after the price of milk in Mumbai was raised by ₹2 per liter. The company has attributed this bread price hike to rising raw material costs, the cost of materials used in plastic packaging, and transportation expenses, in addition to the continuous depreciation of the Indian Rupee.

    Heavy Imports of Packaging Materials
It is noteworthy that the country imports vast quantities of the plastic raw materials used for packaging. The depreciation of the Rupee has made these imports even more expensive. On the other hand, the surge in the prices of petrol, diesel, and CNG has led to an increase in transportation costs. Oil companies have delivered the shock of fuel price hikes twice within just five days. Consequently, delivery costs have also risen.

It is worth noting that, effective May 14, both Amul and Mother Dairy implemented new prices for their packaged milk, with both companies raising prices by ₹2 per liter.
