The next step to dispose of Union Carbide’s waste depends on the Supreme Court’s instructions

Bhopal. Government officials will wait for the Supreme Court’s instructions before going ahead with the plan to dispose of 337 tonnes of waste from Bhopal’s Union Carbide factory at a waste disposal unit in Pithampur.

Indore Divisional Commissioner Deepak Singh told a news agency that the next hearing on the Union Carbide waste disposal case is scheduled in the Supreme Court on February 27 and we will wait for the court’s instructions in this hearing. He said that the administration’s next step regarding the Union Carbide waste disposal plan will depend on the Supreme Court’s instructions.

The commissioner’s statement came after the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked officials to provide information about the precautions taken for the disposal of the hazardous waste of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy in Pithampur area of ​​Dhar district.

On February 17, the apex court had sought response from the Centre, Madhya Pradesh government and its pollution control board on a plea raising the issue of risk to life and health of residents of villages located within a radius of one kilometre from the disposal site.

Let us tell you that in 1984, on the intervening night of December 2 and 3, highly toxic methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas leaked from the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal. At least 5,479 people were killed and thousands were crippled. It is considered one of the biggest industrial disasters in the world.
