The US could attack Iran at any time, and Iran would face serious consequences if the ongoing nuclear talks between the two countries fail. This claim has been made by a former US Defense Official. Amid weeks of tensions between the US and Iran, former Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Celeste A. Wallander has stated that the US has deployed a large military fleet in the Middle East, indicating that the US is fully prepared to attack Iran if the talks fail.

A former Pentagon official made these remarks in an interview. According to Wallander, the US hasn’t deployed its largest military fleet to the region without reason or simply to send a message. He stated that the US has exerted more pressure on Iran than ever before, and this should be interpreted as a warning of potential military action rather than a simple deterrence signal.

America Preparing for War
Wallander stated that the US is preparing for an emergency. He said, “The type of military aircraft carriers the US has sent to the Middle East is significantly different from previous US military deployments to pressure Iran.” He further stated that while such deployments can serve as a message and intimidation, the current situation shows that the US is not simply demonstrating strength. Rather, it is preparing for an emergency. He said that Iran must find ways to negotiate with the US.

Another Warship Deployed
The former Pentagon official’s comments come at a time when US President Donald Trump has ordered the USS Gerald R. Ford, the most advanced nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, and its strike group to be deployed from the Caribbean Sea to West Asia. This warship has now joined the USS Abraham Lincoln and its supporting fleet already in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea region. This has increased pressure on Iran at both diplomatic and military levels. It is reported that the US is dissatisfied with the lack of concrete results from indirect talks with Iran in Oman on its nuclear program.

Trump again hinted at regime change
Previously, Donald Trump has once again stated that nothing could be better than regime change in Iran. Responding to reporters’ questions about efforts to end the Islamic regime in Iran, Trump said, “Nothing could be better than this. They’ve been talking for 47 years.” Asked about the aircraft carrier deployment, Upon leaving, Trump said, “If we can’t reach a deal, we’ll need it.” However, Arab countries have already warned that any attack could spark regional conflict, especially at a time when West Asia is still recovering from the impact of the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.

Second Round of Talks Soon
Meanwhile, Iran and the US will enter the second round of indirect nuclear talks in Geneva on Tuesday. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Majid Takht Ravanchi, confirmed this in an interview with the BBC in Tehran, saying that the US would have to prove its seriousness to reach an agreement. He said that if the US shows sincerity, the resumed indirect talks between the two sides could lead to an agreement. The first round of talks between the two countries took place on February 6 in Muscat, the capital of Oman. Ravanchi said that Iran’s offer to significantly dilute uranium enriched up to 60 percent is proof that the country wants to reach a deal. He said, “If If they are willing to talk about sanctions, we are willing to discuss this issue and other issues related to our nuclear program.”
