New Delhi: Reports of hundreds of people going missing in the first 27 days of 2026 in the national capital, Delhi, have raised concerns. Responding to this, the Delhi Police said on Thursday that there is no reason to panic or be afraid. The number of missing persons reports has not increased compared to previous years.
According to official data, 807 people were reported missing in Delhi between January 1 and January 27. Of these, 235 have been traced so far, while 572 are still missing. The number of children among the missing is quite high; 191 minors were reported missing during this period, of whom only 48 have been found.
Amidst growing public concerns, the Delhi Police issued a detailed statement stating that the number of missing persons cases in January 2026 has decreased compared to the same period in previous years.
‘Spreading Fear for Monetary Gain…’
Today, the Delhi Police issued another statement, warning of action against those who are spreading various rumors regarding this matter.
Issuing a statement on social media, the Delhi Police said, “After following some leads, we have found that the uproar over the increase in the number of missing girls in Delhi is being promoted for monetary gain. Spreading fear for financial benefit will not be tolerated, and we will take strict action against such people.”
The police appealed to citizens not to believe or spread rumors. They also warned that legal action would be taken against those spreading misinformation. However, the data continues to highlight persistent challenges.
What does the old data say?
Of the 137 children still missing at the beginning of 2026, 120 are girls, most of whom are between 12 and 18 years old. Long-term records show that between 2016 and 2026, more than 60,000 children were reported missing in Delhi, of whom nearly seven thousand are still unaccounted for.
