Trouble for Thalapathy Vijay’s last film, Jan Nayakan; Supreme Court to decide its fate

January 14, 2026

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear a petition on Thursday (January 15, 2026) regarding the release of Thalapathy Vijay’s Tamil film ‘Jan Nayakan’. The film’s producers, KVN Productions, have challenged an interim order of the Madras High Court in the Supreme Court.

A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih will hear the petition. The case pertains to the issuance of a censor certificate for the film. The film was initially expected to receive a UA certificate, but a controversy arose after some complaints.

The film’s producers submitted the film to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on December 18, and the board recommended a UA certificate with some cuts. The producers made the necessary changes, but the certificate was not issued. The board referred the film to the Revising Committee, against which the producers filed a petition in the Madras High Court.

  • On January 9, a single bench of Justice P.T. Asha of the High Court directed the censor board to immediately issue the UA certificate. The court observed that repeatedly considering complaints would set a worrying precedent. However, on the same day, the board appealed to a division bench of the High Court. The division bench stayed the single bench’s order, stating that the censor board had not been given sufficient opportunity to present its case. The film was initially scheduled for release on January 9, but the division bench’s stay order has made its release uncertain.

KVN Productions filed a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court on January 12. This film is considered to be Vijay’s last film before his full-fledged entry into politics. He recently launched his political party, ‘Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’.

‘Jan Nayakan’ is produced by KVN Productions and directed by H. Vinoth. The film stars Thalapathy Vijay and Pooja Hegde in lead roles. The producers have stated that the film will be released in four languages across 22 countries.
