Trump’s New Proposal, Jobs of 150,000 Indian Truck Drivers in the US at Risk

July 18, 2026

New Delhi. US President Donald Trump has introduced a new and highly controversial proposal regarding migrants, which could have a direct and significant impact on the hundreds of thousands of Indian migrants living in the United States. Trump has announced that his administration intends to replace the large number of immigrant truck drivers currently operating on the country’s roads with retired US military veterans.

Trump alleged that a majority of these immigrant drivers are addicted to drugs and are claiming lives on the roads. Speaking at the Military Investment Summit in Pennsylvania, Trump stated that his administration is launching a nationwide crackdown against drivers operating large trucks illegally or without proper documentation.

  • Trump stated, “My administration will soon take historic action against illegal foreign truck drivers who are claiming lives on the roads. They cannot even read roadside signage. Many of them are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. They have entered the country completely illegally, and we do not want to see them driving on American roads.”

Trump further added that proud American veterans would take the place of these drivers. Under the proposal, any US citizen with experience driving heavy trucks in the military would be issued a Commercial Driving License (CDL) directly, without any hassle.

Licenses of 200,000 immigrants already revoked
This is not merely a hollow announcement; the Trump administration is already carrying out a major crackdown in this regard. According to reports, as recently as March of this year, the commercial licenses of approximately 200,000 immigrant drivers—who previously held the legal right to live and work in the US—were revoked.

In fact, as American citizens have increasingly shied away from truck driving, this sector had become a lucrative source of income for both legal and illegal immigrants in recent years.

A major blow for the Indian community, especially Sikh and Punjabi drivers
According to data from the North American Punjabi Truckers Association (NAPTA), there are currently between 130,000 and 150,000 truck drivers in the US hailing from Punjab and Haryana.

If this new proposal by Trump is fully implemented, the livelihoods of these families will face a direct threat. Truck drivers of Indian origin are already grappling with the impact of stringent government measures, such as mandatory English proficiency tests and new regulations regarding driving logs.
