Washington: US President Donald Trump has once again claimed to have stopped the conflict between India and Pakistan in May. Furthermore, Trump once again invoked tariffs as a weapon. He said on Monday that tariffs (import duties) were used as a weapon to stop the recent conflict between India and Pakistan. What he said proved to be very effective.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said, “Tariffs are very important to America. We are peacekeepers because of tariffs. We earn hundreds of billions of dollars, but because of tariffs, we also have the power to stop wars.” He claimed that if he had not used the power of tariffs, four wars would still be going on today.

We earn hundreds of billions of dollars, but because of tariffs, we also have the power to stop wars.” He claimed that if he had not used the power of tariffs, four wars would still be going on today. Trump said, “I use tariffs to prevent war. If you look at India and Pakistan, they were ready to attack each other. Seven planes were shot down. They were ready for war. Both are nuclear-armed countries. I don’t want to mention what I said, but what I said was very effective. They stopped. It was based on tariffs and trade.”

India has consistently denied third-party intervention.
It is noteworthy that India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7th to teach a lesson to the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack. Under this operation, terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir was targeted. This action was taken in response to the April 22nd attack in Pahalgam, in which 26 civilians were killed.

After four days of attacks, a ceasefire agreement was reached between India and Pakistan on May 10th. Trump then tried to take credit for stopping the conflict through a post. However, India has clarified that this agreement was reached through direct talks between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two armies. Subsequently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated in Parliament that no leader of any country asked India to halt Operation Sindoor.

Trump has consistently claimed to have stopped seven wars.
Trump has consistently claimed to have ended seven wars during his second term. These include the conflicts between India and Pakistan, Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, Congo and Rwanda, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Armenia and Azerbaijan. Trump has consistently stated that at least half of these wars were ended by his business acumen and the power of tariffs. “If it weren’t for tariffs, four wars would still be ongoing, and thousands of people would be dying every day.”
