New Delhi. US President Donald Trump made a surprise phone call to America’s Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor. At the time, Gor was attending a ceremony held in New Delhi to mark the occasion of America’s 250th Independence Day. During the call, Trump openly praised both India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Trump stated, “I love India, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a close friend of mine.” This unexpected conversation took place during a major event attended by numerous diplomats, senior officials, business leaders, and members of both the Indian and American communities. The ceremony was hosted at the US Embassy.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also attended the ceremony. Rubio, too, strongly endorsed the growing relationship between India and the United States. In his address, Rubio remarked, “India is one of those nations with which we share a vital strategic partnership. We share many common values and mutual interests.”

Rubio further added that the United States views India as a crucial element of its broader Indo-Pacific strategy, and Washington remains fully committed to further strengthening the ties between the two nations.
Prior to this occasion as well, Rubio had described the India-US partnership as the “bedrock” of America’s Indo-Pacific strategy. He also hinted at several major announcements expected to be made by the two countries in the coming months. In New Delhi, Rubio also held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. During these meetings, discussions focused on issues such as regional security, defense cooperation, strategic technology, and strengthening the Quad framework.
