New Delhi: Despite the imposition of President’s rule in Manipur, the violence is not stopping. On Saturday, a situation of unrest arose again in the state’s Kangpokpi district. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had issued instructions for free movement across the state from March 8. Against the instructions of the Union Home Minister, on Saturday, security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse protesters opposing the peace march organized by the Meitei organization. During this, many were injured.
After the violent demonstration, the police said that during this time there was a clash between the protesters and the security personnel. During this, stones were pelted, due to which many people were injured. During this, the protesters demonstrated violently. Attempts were made to stop the state transport bus going from Imphal to Senapati district and set some private vehicles on fire.
Protesters on NH-2 (Imphal-Dimapur highway) burnt tyres and tried to block the movement of state government vehicles. The protest was against a peace march organised by a Meitei body under the aegis of the Federation of Civil Society (FOCS). However, the peace march comprising more than 10 four-wheelers was stopped by security forces at Sekmai on its way to Kangpokpi district. Police had earlier said they were asked to stop the march as they did not have permission.
A policeman said they were only following orders. They were asked to stop the march. If they wanted to go, they could have travelled in state buses arranged by the government. However, the protesting FOCS members retorted that they were only following Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s directive allowing free movement across the state from Saturday.
Meanwhile, a purported video of a group of volunteers from Kuki-Jo village was released from an undisclosed location. The video said that it is against the Indian government’s decision regarding free movement and demands a separate administration. The authenticity of the video could not be confirmed by PTI. In the video, a volunteer was heard saying that any attempt to enter our areas will be strongly resisted. There will be no free movement before a separate administration.
