New Delhi. There is a possibility of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) forming a government in Delhi by next week. On the other hand, discussions have intensified about who the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is in the opposition this time, will make the leader of the opposition in the Delhi Assembly. Among these, the names of acting Chief Minister Atishi, former minister Gopal Rai, four-time Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha and four-time Tilak Nagar MLA Jarnail Singh are leading. This information was given by AAP officials on Friday.
An AAP leader said, ‘The name of the leader of the opposition has not been decided yet, but Atishi, Gopal Rai, Sanjeev Jha and Jarnail Singh are leading for this post. The name will be officially announced when the decision is taken.’ In the recently concluded Delhi Assembly elections, AAP suffered a setback and BJP registered a spectacular victory. The party has come to power in Delhi after 27 years, it has got 48 seats. While AAP got only 22 seats.
Aatishi, who is in the race to become the leader of the opposition, represents the Kalkaji assembly constituency, from where she has won for the second consecutive time. Before being appointed Chief Minister in September 2024, she served as an AAP minister handling 18 departments including Finance, PWD, Education, Planning. She resigned from the CM post a day after the results of the assembly elections were declared on 9 February. She has been asked to continue as the caretaker Chief Minister till the swearing-in of the new CM.
Gopal Rai, who won for the third time in a row from Babarpur assembly constituency, has been a Delhi minister since 2015 and has handled several other departments including Transport, Environment and Development. He is one of the most senior MLAs of AAP and the party considers him a good speaker. Apart from this, he is also working as the convener of the Delhi unit of AAP. A sitting AAP MLA said that the best choice for the post of Leader of Opposition would have been Arvind Kejriwal or Manish Sisodia, but both have lost their New Delhi and Jangpura seats. AAP’s Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha has been elected for the fourth consecutive time. Jarnail Singh has also become MLA from Tilak Nagar for the fourth time.
