Will America impose the lowest tariff on India? Deal in the final round, Trump said – everything is fine!

July 18, 2025

New Delhi: Discussions are going on between America and India regarding the trade deal. The Indian team has gone to Washington for trade talks and is discussing the agreement on tariff. In this, America is asking India to reduce tariff on dairy and agricultural products, but India is sticking to its terms for the national interest. At the same time, India also wants America to keep its tariff between 15 to 10 percent or less.

Amidst this struggle, a report is making a big disclosure about the tariff. The report says that under the proposed trade agreement with America, India can get preferential tariff facility, which will probably protect it from the heavy reciprocal tariff imposed on other countries from August 1.

Preference means imposing lower tariff on Indian goods compared to countries like Vietnam. For example, if 20 percent tariff is imposed on Vietnamese goods, then India will have less tariff than this.

What information did the senior official give?
According to the report, a senior official told the informant that the US agreement is completely based on preferential treatment. India’s trade delegation, led by Special Secretary and Chief Negotiator Rajesh Agarwal, is currently in Washington to finalize the agreement. This discussion is taking place amid tariff changes in the US. Donald Trump has started giving information about tariffs to different countries. At the same time, a 26 percent tariff has been announced on India.

Talks in the final round
On Thursday, Trump made a big announcement, in which he said that we are very close to the deal with India. He said that the talks with India regarding the deal are going well. Everything is going well and soon this deal will be finalized.

When will the India-US trade deal be done?
Industry experts in India are hopeful that a preliminary agreement will be reached before the August 1 deadline or a mini trade deal will be finalised, which will help avoid the damage caused by tariffs. The US is India’s largest export market, accounting for more than 15% of total exports.

According to the Commerce Ministry, in the financial year 2024-25, India exported goods worth $86.51 billion to the US, registering a trade surplus of $40.82 billion. If the US imposes a 26 per cent reciprocal tariff, it will significantly reduce trade profits and Indian exporters will suffer huge losses. India can benefit greatly from preferential treatment.
