New Delhi: The results of Maharashtra’s Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections have raised concerns for Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. In the elections held in 288 Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats of the state, MNS failed to win even a single post of Municipal President. This result is being considered a big political blow for the party.
According to the results released by the State Election Commission on December 21, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance won a total of 207 municipal posts. In this, BJP got 117 posts, Eknath Shinde faction’s Shiv Sena got 53 and Ajit Pawar faction’s NCP got 37 posts.
At the same time, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi won a total of 44 Municipal President posts. Congress won 28 posts, Uddhav Thackeray group’s Shiv Sena won 9 and Sharad Pawar group’s NCP won 7 posts. Amidst all this, MNS not even opening its account raises questions on the ground position of the party.
MNS continues to face defeat
This is not the first time that MNS has had to face such a defeat. Even in the Mumbai BEST Employees Co-operative Credit Society elections held in August 2025, the joint panel of MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT) did not get a single seat. In that election, the BJP-backed panel had captured all 21 seats.
Earlier, in the Maharashtra Assembly elections of November 2024, the performance of MNS was very poor. The party contested elections on 135 seats, but failed to win even a single seat. Due to these continuous defeats, questions are being raised about the political strategy and future of the party.
BMC elections to be held on January 15
However, there has been no response from MNS regarding further politics. The State Election Commission had announced on December 15 that elections for 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra will be held in a single phase on January 15, 2026. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation i.e. BMC is also included in this. According to the Commission, the results of these elections will be declared on January 16, 2026. It is not clear at present after the results of the civic elections whether the parties of Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray will be in alliance or not.
